The Bright Guide to Outdoor Swimming In & Around London

Beautiful lakes, tidal pools and open-water escapes worth the journey.

There’s something about swimming outdoors that instantly changes the pace of the day. Whether it’s a peaceful woodland lake, a historic bathing pond or a tidal pool by the sea, time seems to slow down the moment you step into the water.

From iconic London swims to beautiful escapes just beyond the city, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite places for an outdoor dip this summer. Some are perfect for a spontaneous morning swim, while others are well worth planning an entire day around.

Wasing Estate, Berkshire

Approx. 1 hour from London

Best for: A restorative escape

If we had to choose one destination from this list, Wasing would probably be it.

Set within a beautiful private estate, Wasing’s wild swimming lake feels worlds away from everyday life. Swim amongst the trees before warming up in the Scandinavian-style sauna, gathering around the fire pit or simply enjoying the peace of the woodland setting. Throughout the year, the estate also hosts seasonal wellbeing experiences, making it somewhere you’ll want to return to beyond the summer months.

Good to know

  • Pre-booking is essential.
  • Many sessions include access to the sauna.
  • Seasonal wellbeing events run throughout the year.

Walpole Bay Tidal Pool, Margate

Approx. 2 hours from London

Best for: A seaside day out

Built in the 1930s, Walpole Bay is the UK’s largest tidal pool and one of Britain’s most unique places to swim.

Filled naturally by the sea, it offers all the joy of open-water swimming with the reassurance of a sheltered pool. Afterwards, spend the afternoon exploring Margate’s independent shops, galleries and cafés before heading back to the beach.

Good to know

  • Check the tide times before travelling.
  • Bring sea shoes if you’re sensitive to uneven surfaces.

Divers Cove, Surrey

Approx. 1 hour from London

Best for: Crystal-clear freshwater

Just over an hour from London, Divers Cove offers one of the clearest outdoor swimming experiences in the South East.

Surrounded by trees, it has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere that’s ideal whether you’re trying open-water swimming for the first time or simply looking for somewhere different to spend a sunny afternoon.

Frensham Great Pond, Surrey

Approx. 1 hour from London

Best for: A freshwater beach

With its sandy shoreline, calm water and surrounding heathland, Frensham Great Pond feels surprisingly far removed from the city.

Pack a picnic, settle in for the afternoon and enjoy one of Surrey’s most beautiful natural swimming spots before exploring the surrounding walking trails.

Good to know

Swimming is seasonal, so it’s worth checking local guidance before visiting.

Hampstead Heath Bathing Ponds

North London

Best for: A London classic

No list of outdoor swimming spots would be complete without Hampstead Heath.

These spring-fed ponds have been loved by Londoners for generations and remain one of the capital’s most memorable places for an outdoor swim. Arrive early if you can, particularly on warm weekends, and enjoy one of London’s most iconic summer rituals.

The Serpentine Lido, Hyde Park

Central London

Best for: A spontaneous city dip

If you’re looking for an outdoor swim without leaving central London, the Serpentine is hard to beat.

Surrounded by Hyde Park, it’s an easy way to cool off on a warm day before wandering through one of London’s most beautiful green spaces.

Worth Making a Weekend Of

Knepp Estate, West Sussex

If you’re happy to pitch a tent or book a glamping stay, Knepp deserves a place on your summer wishlist.

Home to one of Britain’s best-known rewilding projects, the estate offers campsite and glamping guests access to a natural swimming pond, a wood-fired Nordic sauna, outdoor hot baths and yoga sessions, all surrounded by ancient woodland and wildflower meadows. Afterwards, head to the Wilding Kitchen, where seasonal dishes celebrate produce from the estate and local growers.

Good to know

The swimming pond is exclusively available to campsite and glamping guests.

Before You Dive In

A little preparation goes a long way.

  • Always check local swimming guidance before travelling.
  • If you’re visiting Walpole Bay, check the tide times before setting off.
  • Never swim alone in unfamiliar open water.
  • Pack plenty of water, sun protection and warm layers for afterwards.
  • Respect nature and leave every spot exactly as you found it.
